Gaudi´s Sagrada Familia

El Capricho de Gaudí

EL Capricho de GaudíThis was the second work given to Gaudí, and the first one to be finished. Its located in Comillas in the province and autonomous community of Cantabria in northern Spain.

The building is known as El Capricho, that seems quite appropriate since it was built for Máximo Díaz de Quijano, a single person who did not need much living space for himself and his service.

For the first time are curved lines in the artist's work. The existing tower above the main entrance has a specific purpose, and that inside there is only a narrow spiral staircase leading to a small balcony, but gives it originality and enriches the building.

Its exterior decor is more restrained and less bizarre than his other early work, Casa Vicens, which conducted almost in parallel in Barcelona. Here is also appreciated the Arab-Muslim influence. The massive columns of the entrance, free interpretation of the Doric style are a reminiscent of medieval times.

Colegio Teresiano

Colegio Teresiano GaudíAs happened with the Sagrada Familia, Gaudí took over a school works and the main house of the order Teresian in Barcelona, when the building was already built up, the first floor, by an architect or master builder whose name is unknown.

This situation imposed certain restrictions, which where added to the limited funds of the religious community and the desire to represent austerity imposed by the rule of poverty of the order.

In this work Gaudí introduced a large number of external decorative wrought iron railings, so the taste of the great architect.
Gaudi addressed these works for a short time, not reaching the end of the school or chapel that was built in 1908, designed by Gabriel Borrell i Clarke, professor of the School of Architecture.

This school is located in Ganduxer st., in the corner with Ronda General Mitre.

Gaudis First Work - Casa Vicens

Gaudis casa VicensCasa Vicens was the first job Gaudi signed after getting his degree in architecture. It was built between 1883 and 1888.

It was an old house in Villa de Gracia, that was once on the outskirts of Barcelona (today part of the city, the Gracia district, absorbed by the growth of Barcelona). It was built for Manuel Vicens,Trade and Exchange Broker. Some sources quote him wrongly as a manufacturer of bricks and tiles. Due to economic difficulties that arose at the owner, completion took longer than it should.

In this early work we find Muslim and Arab reminiscences, in a unique fusion with indigenous elements. The extensive use of tiles, both indoors and outdoors, provides colour and originality. This work could be defined as a beautiful collage of styles and seeds of new ideas. In this work Gaudi is still not using the curved shapes, so characteristic of Gaudí's architecture, as seen in the Sagrada Familia. He still holds the traditional application of the rule and straight lines.

The forgotten Can Artigas Gardens

Artigas Gardens BarcelonaIn the spring of 1903 when Gaudí had already begun work on the Park Güell, Joan Artigas, a textile manufacturer, ask the architect to make the design for his gardens in a parcel that he had covering a part of the upper Llobregat River. The passage of time and neglect of the men left this Gaudí’s fingerprint forgotten and it was not until 1971 when a correspondent for the newspaper “El Correo Catalan” discovered the existence of the gardens designed by Gaudi, after talking with someone that worked on the project. Gaudí designed the garden (very similar to the Park Guell, but on a smaller scale) but not personally directed the work. The works took place between 1905 and 1906. These Gardens are located at La Pobla de Lillet, they are owned by the municipality and are open to the public.

Gaudí's dead

Not much people know how Gaudí died. From what it known he was hit by a tram in front of Sagrada Familia when he crossed the street aiming to go to the construction side of his masterpiece.

He lay in the hospital "Hospital de la Santa Creu", but people didn't recognise the famous artist because of his neglected appereance.

Only three days later, a friend of him found him in this hospital and asked for a private room for him. The same day, 10 July 1926 he died.

He was buried in the midst of La Sagrada Família.
