Gaudi´s Sagrada Familia

History of the Sagrada Familia

The roof of Sagrada FamiliaThe promoter of the Sagrada Famila construction was Bocabella i Verdaguer Josep Maria, a highly educated bookseller who in 1866 founded "The Spiritual Association of Devotees of San Jose" an entity which aimed to support the dissemination of Catholicism
The activity Josep Maria Bocabella developed to promote his idea led him in 1872 on a visit to the Holy Father in Rome to offer on behalf of the Association a silver image of the Holy Family. He visited the town of Loreto, where the sight of its church inspired him. He was also the one who found the plot of 12.800m2 and bought it for a price of 1.034 Euros.

The works started in 1882 with the architect F. Villar y Lozano as the head of the project but soon he was replaced as some conflicts between him and Bocabella arose. Gaudi, who was then only 31 years old, accepted to be in charge of this project that he started in 1883 with the crypt that was already begun, adding a moat around so it could have direct light and natural ventilation. Gaudí also modified the capitals, under dispute with Villar. All this after abandoning his initial idea of building the temple diagonally on the plot, which was impossible because the vault was already started.

Greenpeace activists protest at top of Sagrada Familia

Greenpeace activists scaled the Sagrada Familia on Monday to protest climate change ahead of the  five day UN climate change talks.

The activists attempted to unfurl a 600 square meter banner saying "World Leaders make the climate call" from the top of the iconic church in Barcelona, but were prevented from doing so by the wind. Instead, they hung two smaller banners from the giant cranes hovering over the unfinished work of Gaudí, saying "Save the climate".

For Modernism lovers, Barcelona is a “must” place to visit, not only because of the 14 different works that Gaudi left in the city, but also for the, at least fifty, masterpieces of other architects of his time. But, if you don’t have much time when visiting Barcelona, and you would like to concentrate only in the works of genius Gaudi, we present you here the route that we propose…

Palacio Episcopal de Astorga

palacioepiscopaldeastorgaIn the end of 1886, a fire completely destroyed the Episcopal Palace of Astorga.  The former Bishop Grau decided to ask his friend Gaudí to construct a new episcopal seat right next to the cathedral.

The relationship between Grau and Gaudí began years earlier when the bishop, inaugurated the chapel with the altar designed by Gaudí. That construction of Palacio Episcopal de Astorga took six years from 1889-1893. During this time, Gaudí had a very good relationship to bishop Grau as he traveled often to Astorga.

This museum is located in the Gothic district near to the cathedral of Barcelona. Frederic Mares was a great sculpturist and there are his most famous works, which he donated to the city. There are few different parts in the museum. The main part focuses on Mares sculptures. But there is also a part which focuses on sculptures from preRoman time until 20th century. In another part you can find different objects from 19th century. Its an interesting museum for sculpture lovers.

Gaudí's dead

Not much people know how Gaudí died. From what it known he was hit by a tram in front of Sagrada Familia when he crossed the street aiming to go to the construction side of his masterpiece.

He lay in the hospital "Hospital de la Santa Creu", but people didn't recognise the famous artist because of his neglected appereance.

Only three days later, a friend of him found him in this hospital and asked for a private room for him. The same day, 10 July 1926 he died.

He was buried in the midst of La Sagrada Família.
