Parc Güell

Park Güell (Spanish: Parque Güell, catal. Parc Güell) is a large garden with architectural elements. It is situated in the Olot street, on the side of Santuari de la Muntanya avenue, in north-central part of the city. Designed by the Catalan architect Antonio Gaudí at the request of his friend Eusebio Guell. Eusebio Guell was Barcelona’s industrialist who fascinated with  the English “city-gardens" decided to finance the project. At first Parc Güell was supposed to be a residential area for the rich bourgeoisie spreaded on the area of 20 ha. The construction lasted between 1900-1914. Gaudí never managed to finish the project. In 1922, the Barcelona government bought the land and transformed it into the town park, where you can enter for free.

Pabellones de la Finca Güell

finca guellPabellones de la Finca Güell (Güell Pavilions') were formerly located on the outskirts of the city, the property is now situated on the Avinguda Pedralbes 7. The construction was ordered by the industrialist Eusebi Güell, this began the long-time cooperation between the two. Gaudí designed a gatehouse, a horse stable, and the enclosure wall of the existing Finca Güell. This farm was purchased by the father of the industrialist in 1860. On the spacious wooded area was already a house from the mid-19th Century. After the death of his son Güell donated the property to the city of Barcelona.

The gatehouse consists of a single octagonal level topped with a cupola, which is connected to two quadratic buildings located on the left to the main entrance. The stables, on the right, form a long rectangle, which is characterized by its parabolic arches and a cupola. Both pavilions fit directly into the enclosing wall. The most famous part is probably the  main, iron gate. It is considered to be a masterpiece of metalworking and forms a dragon with wide opened mouth and spread wings. The threatening effect that is intensified by a complicated mechanism: by the opening of the gate, the jaws of the dragon move.

Casa Calvet

Casa CalvertCasa Calvet, which construction Gaudí began in 1898, was quite a challenge for the architect - mainly because the building had to be fit into a row of already existing buildings. House served different purposes - the cellars and ground floor were occupied by stores and offices, the higher floors - eight individual flats.

To fulfill his task,Gaudí constructed a very simple building with nearly symmetrical profile. Only in the upper parts he expressed his creativity - from the top of the house three martyrs are "watching" the passers-by (ther is also a practical lift for pulling up furniture). In comparison with neighboring large and simple houses Casa Calvet seems to be much larger. Architect received such an effect by the top frame and many round balconies.

Finca Güell

Finca Güell by GaudíBuildings designed to house stables and riding area for which later became Gaudís main client, and also good friend, Eusebi Güell.

Unlike the other works undertaken by Gaudí in his first buildings, the exterior of this property is very sober and lacking of windows. In this case Gaudi his attention to the functionality of the interiors. The materials used are again basically bricks and tiles, maintaining a more relaxed neo-Mudejar style.

Gaudí's dead

Not much people know how Gaudí died. From what it known he was hit by a tram in front of Sagrada Familia when he crossed the street aiming to go to the construction side of his masterpiece.

He lay in the hospital "Hospital de la Santa Creu", but people didn't recognise the famous artist because of his neglected appereance.

Only three days later, a friend of him found him in this hospital and asked for a private room for him. The same day, 10 July 1926 he died.
