Casa Calvet

Lesser known Gaudi works

Casa CalvertCasa Calvet, which construction Gaudí began in 1898, was quite a challenge for the architect - mainly because the building had to be fit into a row of already existing buildings. House served different purposes - the cellars and ground floor were occupied by stores and offices, the higher floors - eight individual flats.

To fulfill his task,Gaudí constructed a very simple building with nearly symmetrical profile. Only in the upper parts he expressed his creativity - from the top of the house three martyrs are "watching" the passers-by (ther is also a practical lift for pulling up furniture). In comparison with neighboring large and simple houses Casa Calvet seems to be much larger. Architect received such an effect by the top frame and many round balconies.

To be hones the most charm is hidden inside the building - the door with large, dark brown surfaces, household items, furniture designed by Gaudi, metal visors, and wonderful wooden ceilings.
The other important information is, that the project Casa Calvet was the only one for which Gaudí received an award from the town govenrment...

The Casa Calvet is a private house and it is not possible to see it inside.

Gaudí's dead

Not much people know how Gaudí died. From what it known he was hit by a tram in front of Sagrada Familia when he crossed the street aiming to go to the construction side of his masterpiece.

He lay in the hospital "Hospital de la Santa Creu", but people didn't recognise the famous artist because of his neglected appereance.

Only three days later, a friend of him found him in this hospital and asked for a private room for him. The same day, 10 July 1926 he died.

He was buried in the midst of La Sagrada Família.
