Pabellones de la Finca Güell

Lesser known Gaudi works

finca guellPabellones de la Finca Güell (Güell Pavilions') were formerly located on the outskirts of the city, the property is now situated on the Avinguda Pedralbes 7. The construction was ordered by the industrialist Eusebi Güell, this began the long-time cooperation between the two. Gaudí designed a gatehouse, a horse stable, and the enclosure wall of the existing Finca Güell. This farm was purchased by the father of the industrialist in 1860. On the spacious wooded area was already a house from the mid-19th Century. After the death of his son Güell donated the property to the city of Barcelona.

The gatehouse consists of a single octagonal level topped with a cupola, which is connected to two quadratic buildings located on the left to the main entrance. The stables, on the right, form a long rectangle, which is characterized by its parabolic arches and a cupola. Both pavilions fit directly into the enclosing wall. The most famous part is probably the  main, iron gate. It is considered to be a masterpiece of metalworking and forms a dragon with wide opened mouth and spread wings. The threatening effect that is intensified by a complicated mechanism: by the opening of the gate, the jaws of the dragon move.

In this early work of Gaudí we can already observe broad characteristics of his idiosyncratic style, for example the combination of different materials (brick and iron), the use of ceramics in all its color and the curved lines and naturalistic forms.

With the expansion of Avinguda Diagonal, the area of the finca was divided. In the 1950s the University of Barcelona acquired the ensemble, which was made in 1969 as a historical monument. Since 1978 the stables house the Royal Gaudi - Institute of architecture.

Gaudí's dead

Not much people know how Gaudí died. From what it known he was hit by a tram in front of Sagrada Familia when he crossed the street aiming to go to the construction side of his masterpiece.

He lay in the hospital "Hospital de la Santa Creu", but people didn't recognise the famous artist because of his neglected appereance.

Only three days later, a friend of him found him in this hospital and asked for a private room for him. The same day, 10 July 1926 he died.

He was buried in the midst of La Sagrada Família.
