The Cascada in Ciutadella Park

Lesser known Gaudi works

One of the Cascada's DragonsCreated in 1714, the Ciutadella was a fortress built for Felip V to control the city during the war of the Spanish succession. For the Catalans, this Ciutadella was the icon of the Central government therefore, in 1870 the Ciutadella were demolished and a park were created for the 1888 World Fair.

Even if the main architect of the park was Josep Fontsère, Gaudi (who were at this period an unknown student in Architecture) realized himself a part of the “Cascada” which is one of the most impressive attractions of this park. For example, the numerous dragons in front of the basin are a figure quite used by the architecture of Gaudi. We can by this way see his involvement in the creation of this monument and notice that even when he was student his talent was enormous. Visit la Sagrada Familia.

He lay in the hospital "Hospital de la Santa Creu", but people didn't recognise the famous artist because of his neglected appereance.
