Casa Batlló is a mansion situated on Passeig de Gracia 43 in Barcelona that Antoni Gaudí restored on behalf of its owner, Josep Batlló Casanova. Originally the owner wanted to demolish the thirty-years-old house, which was designed by Emilio Sala Cortés and build a completely new one, but Gaudí convinced him to leave the original building and concentrate on giving it a completely new and fresh form.

The building is located in the affluent neighborhood of Barcelona and was originally designed for the middle class. It was built in 1877, and the reconstruction took place between 1905 to 1907. Gaudí, who controlled the renovation work by himself (he was standing on the street all the time), gave the building a very unusual appearance, as he did for all of his buildings.

It seems that the authors aim was to avoid straight lines completely. Wavy facade is fretted with original balconies and irregular, oval windows. The facade of the building is covered with mosaic of glass pieces, which sparkle in color of gold, orange, green and blue. The building is topped with a roof in the shape of a dragon, which is likely to symbolize the fight of St. George (the patron of Catalonia) against the Dragon.

Inside there are rooms with wavy ceilings, wooden, subtle carved stair railings, frames of doors and windows. Fancy shaped windows and doors conceal components of natural ventilation, and stained-glass windows were designed to pass the appropriate amount of daylight.

Residence Casa Batlló was made available to the public in 2002, on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of Gaudi's birth, and in 2005 the building entered on UNESCO World Heritage List.
