The Diagonal Mar Park in the heart of the district of Sant Marti is Barcelona’s second largest park and invites people to relax in the grass or in the shade, play in the wide open spaces, walk dogs, exercise, etc. The size and diversity of this place offer many different opportunities to cater for the needs of the well-mixed audience of the park. Due to its size, the best way to explore the area is probably by bicycle.
In the center of the park lies a large lake together with grassy hills that invite to lie down in the sun and enjoy a break. The park doesn’t have the look of a typical urban park; rather it represents a link between the city and the Mediterranean. The Catalan architect, Enric Miralles, had the idea of a tree in mind that stretches out its branches to the many different paths we –the human race- can take in life. Instead of big shady trees we find large steel-pipe constructions criss-crossed with wire cables and huge flowerpots. However, this difference to other parks makes the Diagonal Mar Park special and appealing to its visitors.
