Els Jardins de la Vi-la Amelia

Parks

jardins de la vila ameliaThese Gardens were originated by Ignasio Girona, who built them on his property and named them in honour of his wife Amelia de Vilanova. The family Girona then used the there located building –the Quinta Amelia- as summerhouse. In 1930, the city council designated the area as a public space but only fully redesigned the garden for public use in 1969.
The Jardins are especially known for their vast amount of different species and unusual trees it offers that are only rarely to be found elsewhere in Barcelona. It was the objective of the re-designers to maintain the romantic and French style of the park yet to make it more temporary and urban. The two main attractions of the park are the pond and the pine tree hill. They are remarkable for the contrast they offer to the visitor. The pond being a wide and open space and the hill being a wild and dense area populated by old and tall pine trees.
The park is especially attractive as it offers many options and impressions to its visitors such as open and bright spaces, dense woods and shady benches. If in the area it is definitely worth visiting this remarkable urban park.

Gaudí's dead

Not much people know how Gaudí died. From what it known he was hit by a tram in front of Sagrada Familia when he crossed the street aiming to go to the construction side of his masterpiece.

He lay in the hospital "Hospital de la Santa Creu", but people didn't recognise the famous artist because of his neglected appereance.

Only three days later, a friend of him found him in this hospital and asked for a private room for him. The same day, 10 July 1926 he died.

He was buried in the midst of La Sagrada Família.
