Standing on the most highest point of the Montjuic mountain “Montjuic fortress” was build in 1652 for defense against Spanish king and his army who wanted to occupy the city of Barcelona. The fortress was build in record time, but it wasn't a stopper for strong Spanish army. In fact the fortress is these days, in a way landmark for occupation of Catalunia. At the Franco regime it was a jail for political criminals and execution place. You can easily find many fresh tombstones from Franco regime at the Montjuic cemetary.
Today the fortress is open to everyone and there is also a war museum. The exposition consists of different weapons and uniforms, army of small soldiers, medieval armor and miniatures of all Catalonian fortresses.
There are several ways to get to the mountain. The easiest and probably the most interesting way is going by funicular from which gives you an amazing view to the old city and Las Ramblas street. The view from the fortress is great as well.
