The Ciutadella Park is one of the most beautiful park of Barcelona. Located near the district of Barceloneta, this park is a very pleasant place to stroll.
In 1715, during the War of Spanish Succession, Philip V decided to build a military stronghold in order to control the city of Barcelona. To achieve its building, he did not hesitate to destroy around 1,250 typical homes of the Ribeira area.
Because Catalans hated this Citadell, in the 19th century they decided to destroy it and convert it into a Park. In 1868, the architect Josep Fontseré began to think about the restructure of the area. He decided to create a lake, a splendid fountain, a big mammoth and other symbolic sculptures. At this period, Gaudí who was still a student worked on this project as an assistant.
Nowadays, the Ciutadella Park is a natural and cultural place. It is quiet and soothing, full of plants, flowers and trees, there are also statues and the architecture is very nice. Concerning the cultural aspect, you could go to visit the large zoo which is one of the most unique of Europe. There are also several museums such as the geology and zoology but also the famous museum of modern art and especially the Parliament of Catalonia.
